Who’s in the park?
At the park, there are children running, children playing ball, children walking with their blankets, children looking for insects and children combing their hair. At the park, there are adults chatting, little ones eating sand and a child helping another child. And, at the park, there’s always the one who doesn’t want to leave…
Strong points
– The album depicts a variety of everyday scenes: all genders, ages, and ethnicities are represented, so that every child can see themselves reflected in the book.
– Delphine Monteil’s writing is direct and rhythmic, like a nursery rhyme.
– Lucille Michielli’s illustrations, created using gouache and colored pencils, are soft, detailed, and particularly well-crafted: they are all brought together in a large, detachable A2 poster!
Delphine Monteil (author)
Born in 1982 in Saint-Malo, Delphine Monteil spent her childhood and teenage years between Brittany and the Paris region. After completing a master’s degree in modern literature, she worked as a proofreader for five years. When her children were born, she created a blog where she reviewed their favorite books. In 2016, with her husband and business partner, she decided to start a children’s book publishing company specializing in picture books: L’Étagère du bas. Delphine Monteil has lived in Rouen since 2022, and At The Park is her first published work.
Lucille Michieli (illustrator)
Lucille Michieli is a freelance illustrator based in Paris. A graduate of the École Estienne, she initially worked in communications before collaborating with several toy brands and magazines such as Milk. Her work blends nature and fantastical influences in a soft, dreamlike color palette. Following The Day I Grew Up in 2022 and We’Ve Been Waiting For You in 2024, At The Park is her third album to be published by L’Étagère du bas.
