Once upon a time, there was a princess who had to leave her own land to marry the prince she was betrothed to. Her mother, the queen, gave her a handkerchief as a good luck charm. So the princess set off on Falada, her favourite horse (whose job was to keep an eye on her), and with one servant, Ermengarde. But, on the way, the princess lost her precious handkerchief and therefore her protection against adversity. The cunning Ermengarde suggested they should exchange clothes and horses, which they did.
