I was very lucky to grow up between two sisters, two role models, and I sometimes wanted to be one and sometimes the other. The three of us shared many things: the same haircut, a passion for outdoor games and doll’s clothes. But one day, I had to leave the garden and Mirabelle’s sweets behind to follow Julie to school. What can you do when you’re dreaming of a dog’s life?
Strong points
-Mélodie Baschet’s sensitive writing offers a tender, funny album about siblings and sisterhood.
-The author-illustrator’s bright, meticulous gouache illustrations aptly depict the important place of pets in the home, as integral members of the family.
-A moral full of gentleness: growing up is above all a matter of searching, groping, trying to be like others… to finally build and become oneself.
MÉLODIE BASCHET (author & illustrator) graduated from the furniture section of the Arts Décoratifs de Paris, where she studied both image and volume. Since then, her work has always resonated with nature. In her compositions, fauna, flora and people enter into communion. Her heroes are usually animals. In this way, each new project is an opportunity for her to remind us that life is a fragile balance. She works freelance for fashion, home, garden and the environment. Since 2016, she has illustrated several children’s albums for Marcel & Joachim, Albin Michel Jeunesse, A2mimo and Mango Éditions. Fosfore et les contes des sages, published by Seuil Jeunesse in 2022, won the Prix du Public du Livre Audio Francophone 2023, organized by Plume de Paon and the Institut français. Sœurs is her second album published by L’Étagère du bas, following La Vieille Ourse, released in 2021 (text by Amélie Billon). She lives in Montreuil, near Paris.
