In an anthropomorphic world, Philéas, a young dog, breaks with family tradition: instead of becoming a sausage seller like his father and grandfather, he dreams of becoming a hairdresser.
But his naivety, generosity, and the twists of fate carry him far from that path—onto a cargo ship, to Italy, then Algeria, and finally into the desert where the novel concludes. Through his adventures and encounters with other people and animals, Philéas grows, matures, and discovers who he truly is. Above all, his journey teaches him that what matters most is not the destination, but the journey itself… and that life is beautiful!
Strong points:
– A joyful, wise travel story full of discovery, written for children but carrying universal meaning
– Fast-paced rhythm, beautiful prose, and illustrations that enrich the experience
